Welcome to Year 5!

Year 5 at Belvedere Junior School is an exciting and enriching year, full of opportunities to explore, create, and grow as learners. It is a year of discovery, challenge, and inspiration—helping our pupils to broaden their horizons and develop a lifelong love of learning.

In English, we study a wide variety of genres across the year. One highlight is our exploration of Shakespeare. As part of the Academy’s Pioneer Passport scheme, Year 5 pupils visit Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Here, they not only watch a performance but also take part in a lively re-telling of one of his plays, bringing literature to life in an unforgettable way.

In Mathematics, our learning is enriched with fortnightly problem-solving lessons. These interactive sessions encourage teamwork, logical thinking, and creativity, giving children the chance to apply their mathematical knowledge in engaging and practical ways.

In Science, one of our topics is Space Scientists. Pupils investigate the planets of our solar system, study the phases of the Moon, and discover how the Moon influences the tides here on Earth. A highlight of this unit is our trip to the Royal Observatory, where pupils deepen their understanding of astronomy and experience the wonder of space first-hand.

In Art, our autumn term focus is Art Nouveau. Children develop their creative skills through sketching and design, and we visit the National Portrait Gallery to explore examples of this style. While there, pupils also search for portraits of the school’s pioneers as part of the tour.

In Design and Technology, one of our projects focuses on healthy eating. Children design and make a healthy dessert, creating a delicious fruit flan while learning about nutrition, preparation, and presentation.

In Physical Education, pupils take part in a wide range of activities that develop fitness, teamwork, and key sporting skills. A particular highlight is that all Year 5 children have the opportunity to go swimming. They learn how to swim with confidence, as well as understanding the importance of water safety and keeping healthy.
